The Hollyfelds
About Us

“Holly” rhymes with ”golly.” “Felds” rhymes with “welds.”

The Lowdown:

The Hollyfelds take classic country, rock, and pop, put it in a pot, add a touch of folk and bluegrass, and baby, they got a stew going. It is music that, as Westword magazine puts it, “splits the difference between alt-country and the genre's mainstream,” and contains “just enough of the whiskey and heartache that makes great country music.”

What others are saying about The Hollyfelds:

“Alt-country perfection.” –The Denver Post

"…an endlessly enchanting band." -Westword Music Blog

“Throughout the album, the deft, soulful musicianship of all five Hollyfelds stand out, but it’s Eryn’s and Kate’s stunning harmonies that make Saratoga an utterly delightful listen. Their honeyed voices contain just enough of the whiskey and heartache that makes great country music.”- Westword

"The Hollyfelds have made one of the finest alt-country albums of the past 10 years. . . Saratoga is a musician’s dream. Start with the dueling vocals of Eryn Hoerig and Kate Grigsby. Their vocals wrap around one another in harmonies so tight they’ll make you want to cry, laugh out loud and jump for joy. . . [The Hollyfelds] are writing the next generation of country standards (or what should be, in a perfect world)…[This is] a band that should inspire you to rename the alt-country genre in their honor. . . It's rare to find a mix of talent with the magical spark that The Hollyfelds possess . . . - Wildy's World Blog

Full Bio, The Continuing Story of The Hollyfelds:

The Hollyfelds take classic country, rock, and pop, put it in a pot, add a touch of folk and bluegrass, and baby, they got a stew going. It is music that, as Westword magazine puts it, “splits the difference between alt-country and the genre's mainstream,” and contains “just enough of the whiskey and heartache that makes great country music.”

Calling Denver, Colorado home, The Hollyfelds started with a marriage and then moved on to other instances of destiny. How the band came together is your typical story of husband and wife musicians...blah blah blah...met boy and girl musicians...blah blah blah...remembered poker buddy musician...Presto!...band formed. In May of 2006, vocalist/guitar player Eryn Hoerig, bassist Keith Hoerig, vocalist/guitarist Kate Grigsby, lead guitarist Tim Mallot, and drummer "Magic" Sam Spitzer officially became The Hollyfelds (and if you're wondering where the name came from, go ahead and treat yourself to the classic 80s film Real Genius) and quickly recorded their EP, File Under ‘H’ For Toy (again: watch Real Genius). Soon after the release, the band started playing shows around Colorado, mainly in the Denver area, but also rocked Laporte pretty hard.

Then, in October of 2007, The Hollyfelds trekked in Eryn's mom's rickety old RV to the Ohio studio of producer Ric Hordinski to record their debut full length. Grammy nominated Hordinski, best known for his work with artists such as Over the Rhine, Victoria Williams, Robbie Fulks and David Wilcox, recorded and produced the album entitled Saratoga, which was released in Feb of 2008 to very favorable responses. Wildy’s World blog proclaimed the album to be one of the top releases of 2008, saying it was “one of the finest alt-country albums of the past 10 years. . .a musician’s dream.” Denver's hometown arts weekly, Westword, awarded The Hollyfelds with the 2008 (and subsequently 2009, 2010, and 2011) music showcase award in the “Country/ Alt-country” category, as well as enthusing: “Throughout the album, the deft, soulful musicianship of all five Hollyfelds stand out, but it’s Eryn’s and Kate’s stunning harmonies that make Saratoga an utterly delightful listen. . .”

In the spring of 2009 The Hollyfelds released a 5 song EP entitled Black Heart Blue. The album was recorded in Denver, once again by Brian Hunter at Mousetrap Studios, who recorded File Under ‘H’ For Toy. After recording, the tracks were mixed and mastered by Masaki (known for his work with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club) in his San Francisco area studio. The album was released to further critical response, resulting in the second Westword Music Showcase award, and a "Best of Denver" award from Westword for "Best Band Playing Country Music the Way It Was Meant To Be Played."

Responses such as these led to The Hollyfelds playing with a number of respected artists such as: The Be Good Tanyas, Robert Earl Keen, Dale Watson, Split Lip Rayfield, Drag The River, The Eli Young Band, Slim Cessna’s Auto Club, The Railbenders, Bobby Bare Jr., Southern Culture on the Skids, Junior Brown, Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles, and many others, as well as to tour dates in several southern and western states.

The summer of 2010 saw the release of Lo Bueno, Lo Malo, Lo Feo, a 2 song EP which was pressed on vinyl records (available at shows), and has been made available as MP3 downloads. Following this release, The Hollyfelds embarked on a tour to the West Coast and back. The summer of 2010 also saw the band being awarded the 3rd Westword Music Showcase award in the "country/alt-country" category, as well as placing in the top ten of the Denver Post's annual UMS music critics poll.

The Hollyfelds have recorded a video for the song "Ain't it Something" with the University of Colorado's film school. They've also been seen and/or heard on HD Net, TLC, a pilot TV series about Denver, and were featured on the Altitude Network's program "On Stage" for their performance in this year's Denver Day of Rock. The Hollyfelds were also awarded their 4th consecutive Westword Music Showcase award in the summer of 2011.

Mostrecently, the Hollyfelds recorded a new full length album, released in November of 2012, called Title Stealers.   The Hollyfelds were also awarded their 5th consecutive Westword Music Showcase award in the summer of 2012.

The band is currently on hiatus to welcome exciting personal changes- keep an eye on our website for upcoming show announcements!
